Seeking a larger God

I grew up in New Albany, Indiana, attended St. Meinrad Seminary and  was ordained in 1969 after receiving a Master of Divinity Degree.  I have done post graduate work at Notre Dame University, Loyola University of Chicago andthe Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, California.

In my 40 years as a priest  I have been a high school teacher,  a youth minister, a campus minister(twice), Archdiocesan Director of Religious Education (twice), Assistant Chancellor for a special project, pastor of two parishes. I am now in my third year at Butler as the Chaplain of the Butler Catholic Community.

I enjoy the outdoors, canoeing, hiking, biking, good books travel and a good glass of wine.

I enjoy what I do at Butler University and as the sacramental minister of Good Shepherd Parish.

My office is in the Center for Faith and Vocation which is directly across from Clowes Hall in a house painted blue and sometimes referred to as the Blue House.

I believe in the God of Jesus. I believe in Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But I also believe that God is far larger and more mysterious than doctrine or my puny faith. I have spent my ministry  seeking and preaching  a larger God who is found Scripture, nature, poetry. Jesus himself was a larger God. I believe I have met this larger God in many different places and that God will continue to grow larger in my own life.

I believe in a Christianity that seeks to serve and heal. It's not about power. It's not about being right. It's about seeing Christ in others and ministering to others in need. It's about being a community of memory and presence in worship, prayer, and reflection. I believe in a Christianity that is tolerant and open to others. I believe in a Christianity with a Catholic perspective and within the Catholic tradition.

WHO is the larger GOD?

A God bigger than our hearts as Paul says,
a God whose heart has no fences
A God who is big enough to  love everyone  without condition
A God who dreams a better world,
Who makes things new
Always seeking justice,
Never losing hope in the human
A God who loves  gardens but
Can be found in ghettos and bars.
A God challenging minds
Planting seeds of faith
A God who is big enough
To ask us to do something big
In order to accomplish something good
A God who gives the world what it truly needs:
Truth and love.
A God whose face is Jesus
And a Christ who can be seen
In a thousand human faces.
A Christ who  is big enough to be
Contained in bread and wine,
in children and in the poor.
A Christ who is a YES
In a room full of NOS
A God who is big enough
That his Spirit blows where it wills.
A God, who in the words of Augustine,
If you think you understand,
What you understand is not God
